Geographical Indications

A Geographical Indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (eg. a town, region, or country). The registration of geographical indications confers legal protection to Geographical Indications in India and prevents unauthorized use of a Registered Geographical Indication by others. It promotes economic prosperity of producers of goods produced in a geographical territory. Some of the examples of the Indian GI are Alphanso Mango, Darjeeling Tea, Nagpur Orange, Kolhapuri Chappal, Kanchipuram Pattu, etc.
The Indian law explicitly extends the protection to geographical indication used not only for agricultural products, but also for manufactured goods, though generally the use of geographical indication maybe more predominant in respect of agricultural products where such products typically have qualities attributable to the specific geographical area, influenced by factors such as climate, soil, etc.
